It’s easy to recognize the voice of Michael McDonald. Distinctive and soulful, it is one of the most yearningly emotive instruments of our time. To this add formidable songwriting and keyboard skills, and you have an artist who has been a singular musical presence for four decades. From 1970s-era Doobie Brothers classics such as “What A Fool Believes” to solo hits like “I Keep Forgettin’,” the five-time Grammy-winning McDonald is that rare thing in contemporary pop — an artist whose work is both timeless and ever-evolving.
Born into a musical family in St. Louis in 1952, Michael started singing when he was four years old. After tinkering with banjo and guitar, he found his true passion at the piano. Soon he was writing his first songs and doing the time-honored apprenticeship with bands in the family garage. Determined to pursue music full-time, McDonald moved to L.A. in the early 70s, where he honed his skills as a session musician and singer.
That soon led to an invitation to join Steely Dan. Over the course of four classic albums, from Katy Lied to Gaucho, McDonald became an integral part of the group’s sound, singing background vocals on staples like “Black Friday” and “Peg.”
In the mid-1970s, McDonald joined The Doobie Brothers, helping the band redefine their funky R&B sound as a singer, keyboardist and songwriter on such Top 40 singles as “Takin’ It To The Streets,” “It Keeps You Runnin’,” “Minute By Minute,” and “What A Fool Believes.”
With a career that encompasses five Grammys, numerous chart successes, personal and professional accolades, as well as collaborations with some of the world’s most prominent artists, Michael McDonald remains an enduring force in popular music.

The Circus is coming to town — Peter Frampton’s Guitar Circus featuring the Robert Cray Band that is. Guitar legend Peter Frampton will be bringing his Guitar Circus to Lancaster on Monday, June 24, and he’s enlisted the help of guitar greats Robert Cray and Roger McGuinn to join in the fun.

At 18, he co-founded one of the first super groups, seminal rock act Humble Pie. His fifth solo album, the electrifying Frampton Comes Alive!, is one of the top-selling live records of all time.
Blues guitarist and singer Robert Cray has won Grammy Awards for contemporary blues album and blues recordings. In January of 2013, Guitarist Magazine voted Cray’s “Nothin But Love” Album of the Year.

The Fab Faux, a five-piece band dedicated to the amazing music of the Beatles, will hit the AMT stage on June 1. According to their website, The Fab Faux, featuring the Crème Tangerine Strings and the Hogshead Horns, will perform a “glorious hodgepodge with a musical trip spanning the career of the Beatles!”
We’d like to share a few interesting excerpts from The Fab Faux’s website page entitled “The Faux Story” —
The musical virtuosity of The Fab Faux — in actuality five of the hardest working musicians in NYC — completely up-ends the concept of a Beatles tribute band. Far beyond being extended sets of cover versions, their astounding shows are an inspired re-discovery of the Beatles’ musical magic, as The Fab Faux tackles the group’s most demanding material live onstage in a way that has to be experienced to be believed.
Calling them, “the greatest Beatles cover band — without the wigs,” Rolling Stone senior editor David Fricke wrote, “the Faux invigorate the artistry of even the Beatles’ most intricate studio masterpieces with top chops and Beatlemaniac glee.”
Approaching the songs with the intent of playing them live as accurately in musical reading and in spirit as possible, The Faux’s breathtaking performances tend to dispel all concert goers’ previous notions of a Beatles tribute act.
“The Fab Faux have the hardest job in the history of R&R and they pull it off well. All rock bands want to be like the Beatles; these guys have the nerve to BE the Beatles. Amazingly, they’re so good at it you learn new things about the originals.” — Dave Marsh, legendary Rock Critic and Sirius Radio Host
