The Man in Black – A Tribute to Johnny Cash

Sunday, October 16, 2022 at 7pm
Tickets: $29
Members On Sale: Wednesday, May 18 at 10am
Public On Sale: Friday, May 20 at 10am

Born and raised in a working class suburb of St. Louis, Shawn Barker took a schoolboy love for singing in church with his family and turned it into a career, a one of a kind tribute to Johnny Cash, one of America’s greatest musical icons. Universally considered the pre-eminent Johnny Cash tribute artist, Barker has an uncanny resemblance to Cash. His strikingly similar looks, voice, and spot-on mannerisms revitalize the true character of Mr. Cash himself, and have led Barker to an immensely successful career performing his tribute to the original “Man In Black”.

Barker’s path to his current success wasn’t a straight line from gospel choir to Johnny Cash tribute act. After serving his country in the Army, Barker came home to Missouri, took a job as a carpenter, and spent all of his free time learning how to play the guitar. He developed strength and versatility in his voice by modeling his crooning on a cast of legends — Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison, Buddy Holly and Gene Vincent. His performances quickly turned from hobby to profession, but oddly enough, Barker’s first touring gigs were portraying Elvis, not Johnny Cash. Everything changed, however, when Barker was asked to audition for the part of Cash in a Hollywood production, as it became evident to the director and Barker himself that Johnny Cash was his true calling. From that point there was no turning back.

With his laid-back vocal delivery and acoustic songwriting, Amos Lee draws inspiration from soul music, ’70s folk, blues, and contemporary jazz. With the release of his self-titled debut album in 2004, the Philadelphia-born former schoolteacher immediately earned the attention of discerning music fans and fellow artists alike for his adult alternative, indie/rock style, seamlessly blending acoustic funk, folk, R&B, and light jazz. In 2011, his album Mission Bell debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, and four of his songs have earned top ten status, namely “Shout Out Loud,” “What’s Been Going On,” “Windows are Rolled Down,” and “Worry No More.”

Joining Amos, to begin the evening, will be soul singer/songwriter, Mutlu. A Philadelphia musician who proudly carries a torch for the city’s soul legacy, Mutlu makes a connection with every audience. Coming up in the Philly scene, he played around town and in area clubs before landing his first tour, opening for Joe Jackson. Since then he’s toured across the U.S. and Europe with his musical brother, Amos Lee, who discovered Mutlu’s music just as both of their careers were taking off. In addition, he’s found an advocate with Daryl Hall & John Oates, who invited Mutlu to support a national theater tour.

It all began in 1975 when Russell Hitchcock and Graham Russell met in Sydney, Australia. The trademark sound of Hitchcock’s soaring tenor voice and Russell’s simple but majestic compositions created a unique sound that would be forever known as Air Supply. The heavily orchestrated, sweet ballads of the British-Australian duo became a staple of early ’80s radio, scoring a string of seven straight Top Five singles. “Lost in Love,” “All Out of Love,” “The One That You Love,” “Making Love Out of Nothing at All,” “Every Woman in the World,” “Even the Nights are Better,” and “Just as I Am” … with a string of hits like this, Air Supply wins the award for most prolific masters of the love song genre for more than 45 years.
