Peter, Paul and Mary became one of the most successful folk groups of the 1960s. Today, Peter Yarrow and Noel Paul Stookey continue to perform in tribute to their 50-year collaboration and friendship with Mary Travers, who passed away in September, 2009.

The following are excerpts from a heart-warming interview with Peter Yarrow, published in an article written by Tom Keogh as a Special to The Seattle Times on August 25, 2011.

Peter Yarrow recalls looking out from a stage at the Lincoln Memorial, guitar PPM1 in hand, at a quarter-million people gathered for the March on Washington. The crowd, soon to hear Martin Luther King, Jr. deliver his immortal “I Have a Dream” speech at the August 28, 1963, National Mall rally for civil and economic rights, was also stirred by what Yarrow calls “music of conscience” performed by Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Mahalia Jackson, and his own hugely popular folk trio Peter, Paul and Mary.

Yarrow remembers Mary Travers, his partner along with Noel Paul Stookey in the acoustic group, taking his hand in acknowledgment of the history they were witnessing. Peter, Paul and Mary then added to the day’s lore by playing Dylan’s “Blowin’ In the Wind” and Pete Seeger’s “If I Had a Hammer.”

The two singers and hit songwriters — Yarrow wrote “Puff, the Magic Dragon,” Stookey, “The Wedding Song (There Is Love)” — have continued as a duo since the 2009 death of Travers.

“People love the music, and the music should, for them, carry on,” says Yarrow. “We’re not saying we’re Peter, Paul and Mary. There will never be another Mary. But I’m proud of the legacy.”

Music may be our middle name, but American Music Theatre is a terrific place to catch an evening of comedy with some of the best in the business. Three of our favorite comedians are returning at the end of the month — Brian Regan on September 27, and Colin Mochrie & Brad Sherwood on September 30. If you’ve not had the opportunity to enjoy either of these laugh-out-loud acts before, here’s your chance!

Brian-Regan-blog1

Brian Regan is known for his observational humor and family-friendly jokes about life’s stupidities. When asked during an interview if he remembered his first gig as a comedian, Brian replied “I did it at college in front of my friends and classmates and it was a disaster. I remember being on stage in front of all these people that I know and being like, ‘So I was on a bus this morning….,’ and they were like, ‘Uh, no you weren’t. We were with you all day.’ So, I remember learning, wow, this should sort of be done in front of strangers.”

Masters of improvisational comedy, Colin Mochrie and Brad Sherwood are still making audiences roar with laughter since their days together on Whose Line Is It Anyway? When Colin and Brad get together on stage, anything can happen. It’s amazing to secolinbrad1 e what these guys will do for a laugh — just ask anyone who’s seen their mousetrap sketch!

Come join us for two great evenings of comedy — you’ll laugh ’til your sides hurt!

In May 2009, Italian teenagers Piero Barone, Ignazio Boschetto, and Gianluca Ginoble, appeared on their country’s popular talent show Ti Lascio Una Canzone and dazzled television viewers with their flawless rendition of the Neapolitan standard “O Sole Mio.” The boys, who won the competition easily, decided their group needed a name. “Il Volo,” meaning “flight,” was chosen to signify the feeling that these three young tenors Il-Volo-graphic were about to spread their wings and fly.

Their astonishing vocals are reflected in their debut album and also in their PBS Special “Live From the Detroit Opera House.” The album is a stellar showcase for these three young singers’ incredible vocal talent and interpretive gifts as they take on a range of both new and traditional, classically influenced pop songs.

Certified platinum in their homeland, the boys have appeared on major US TV shows including The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The Today Show, Good Morning America, The Talk, Ellen, Rachel Ray and Entourage.

“If you ever heard them sing ‘O Solo Mio’ or other classics in their repertoire, then be prepared to be blown away,” raved NY’s Daily News. If you haven’t heard these amazing young men sing yet, check out some great videos from their official website.

“We’ve travelled all over the world these last two years but love our American audiences,” commented the group about their multi-city US tour. “We can’t wait to come back and perform for our fans,” they concluded.

They may be young, but Il Volo’s mission is clear: “We want to share our love for this music with people all over the world, including kids our own age.” That, they say, “would be our dream come true.”

David Gray hails from Manchester, England and has enjoyed a distinguished career as a singer/songwriter and recording artist. He’s sold more than 12 million albums, including his global smash, 1998’s White Ladder, which remains the single best selling album in Irish history and includes his international breakthrough hit “Babylon.” Starting with the release of White Ladder, David made significant use of computer-generated music to accompany his voice and acoustic instrumentation, a technique which differentiated him from manyDavid-Gray-graphic of his peers.

After the success of White Ladder, A New Day At Midnight, and Life In Slow Motion, David began to take a different approach to his music-making. The new development of his singing and songwriting produced more recent albums such as Draw The Line and Foundling. In talking about 2009’s Draw The Line, David said, “Hunger is a very accurate appraisal for how I feel. I got to say things as a writer that I’ve obviously been dying to say for years. Songs like “Nemesis,” “First Chance,” and “Draw The Line” were so liberating. Images and ideas just flowing out and a bit of humour as well, and a bit of caustic soda ground in there too. A bit of spice to the whole thing.”

David has won two Ivor Novello Awards and a Q award, and received a BAFTA nomination, two Brit nominations and a Grammy nomination.

Over the last few years, David was the supporting act for the likes of Kirsty MacColl, Dave Matthews Band and Radiohead. In the summer of 2011, he played at the Dave Matthews festivals in Atlantic City and Chicago and is scheduled to perform at the Nashville Southern Ground Music & Food Festival in September of this year.

Opening for David Gray will be Northern Ireland born singer/songwriter Foy Vance. Vance draws his musical inspirations from both British folk traditions and American gospel, blues and soul.

Welcome back, Richie! One of country music’s most successful acts of the 1990s and their lead singer are sharing the stage once again. The newly reunited Lonestar has released its first single since lead singer Richie McDonald’s return to the group after a five year hiatus to concentrate onLonestar-graphic1-300x216 his solo career. We’re thrilled to have Richie and Lonestar returning to AMT on September 20.

In a 2011 story written by Chuck Dauphin and posted on Billboard.com, Richie McDonald said that despite his leaving the group, the friendship has remained strong, and that led to discussing getting together again.

“Five years has come and gone since I left Lonestar,” Richie said. “We’ve all tried other avenues and the fact remains that some things were just meant to be. With the Lonestar 20 year reunion approaching, Dean, Michael, Keech and I got together and have decided we have some unfinished business to take care of.”

Lonestar made their initial blast on the Country music scene back in 1995 with the top ten “Tequila Talkin,” and have topped the charts with such songs as “Come Cryin’ To Me,” “Mr. Mom,” and their blockbuster 1999 hit “Amazed.”
