Year: 2014

David Gray hails from Manchester, England and has enjoyed a distinguished career as a singer/songwriter and recording artist. He’s sold more than 12 million albums, including his global smash, 1998’s White Ladder, which remains the single best selling album in Irish history and includes his international breakthrough hit “Babylon.” Starting with the release of White Ladder, David made significant use of computer-generated music to accompany his voice and acoustic instrumentation, a technique which differentiated him from manyDavid-Gray-graphic of his peers.

After the success of White Ladder, A New Day At Midnight, and Life In Slow Motion, David began to take a different approach to his music-making. The new development of his singing and songwriting produced more recent albums such as Draw The Line and Foundling. In talking about 2009’s Draw The Line, David said, “Hunger is a very accurate appraisal for how I feel. I got to say things as a writer that I’ve obviously been dying to say for years. Songs like “Nemesis,” “First Chance,” and “Draw The Line” were so liberating. Images and ideas just flowing out and a bit of humour as well, and a bit of caustic soda ground in there too. A bit of spice to the whole thing.”

David has won two Ivor Novello Awards and a Q award, and received a BAFTA nomination, two Brit nominations and a Grammy nomination.

Over the last few years, David was the supporting act for the likes of Kirsty MacColl, Dave Matthews Band and Radiohead. In the summer of 2011, he played at the Dave Matthews festivals in Atlantic City and Chicago and is scheduled to perform at the Nashville Southern Ground Music & Food Festival in September of this year.

Opening for David Gray will be Northern Ireland born singer/songwriter Foy Vance. Vance draws his musical inspirations from both British folk traditions and American gospel, blues and soul.

Welcome back, Richie! One of country music’s most successful acts of the 1990s and their lead singer are sharing the stage once again. The newly reunited Lonestar has released its first single since lead singer Richie McDonald’s return to the group after a five year hiatus to concentrate onLonestar-graphic1-300x216 his solo career. We’re thrilled to have Richie and Lonestar returning to AMT on September 20.

In a 2011 story written by Chuck Dauphin and posted on Billboard.com, Richie McDonald said that despite his leaving the group, the friendship has remained strong, and that led to discussing getting together again.

“Five years has come and gone since I left Lonestar,” Richie said. “We’ve all tried other avenues and the fact remains that some things were just meant to be. With the Lonestar 20 year reunion approaching, Dean, Michael, Keech and I got together and have decided we have some unfinished business to take care of.”

Lonestar made their initial blast on the Country music scene back in 1995 with the top ten “Tequila Talkin,” and have topped the charts with such songs as “Come Cryin’ To Me,” “Mr. Mom,” and their blockbuster 1999 hit “Amazed.”

At the beginning of her theatre tour this past April, Martina McBride posted the following blog on her website:

Hey everybody,

On the bus on the way to Panama City for our first show of the theater tour and thought I’d just jot down some thoughts.

I am so excited about this tour. After having played arenas for the past several years, I had the opportunity to play a Martina-graphic1 couple of theaters last fall in New England. I LOVED it so much, I came home, called my manager, and said, “Can I go do more of that next year???” It was so amazing to be able to really see and hear the audience. To have a show where I can pace it slower and more relaxed. In an arena I always feel like my mission is to keep people up on their feet all night, to never let the show drag, to go, go, go. I am so drawn to this idea of being able to do a different kind of show.

With our intimate, 1,600 seat theatre, Martina should be able to see and hear the entire audience when she performs here on October 5. She may be excited to be playing in smaller venues, but not as excited as we are that she chose AMT to be one of them.

For years, people had been approaching Raul Malo and asking the same question: When are The Mavericks getting back together?

Jump back 23 years earlier, when singer/songwriter Raul Malo joined forces with bassist Robert Reynolds, drummer Paul Deakin, and guitarist Eddie Perez to form the country/pop rock group The Mavericks.

Malo and Reynolds met while attending school and discovered they had similar musical tastes. They both enjoyed the music of Roy Orbison, Patsy Cline, Elvis Presley, Hank Williams,Mavericks-graphic and Johnny Cash. Taking the name the Mavericks, the band began playing rock clubs around the Miami, FL area and built up a solid local following. With music flavored by Latin rhythms and rock, punctuated by Malo’s soaring, romantic tenor, the Mavericks eventually made their way to Nashville and the country music scene.

As time went on, the Mavericks began to rack up numerous Top 40 hits on the Country Singles charts, including “What a Crying Shame,” “O What a Thrill,” “There Goes My Heart,” “Here Comes the Rain,” and “All You Ever Do is Bring Me Down.” For their efforts, the group won a Grammy and multiple awards from the Country Music Association and the Academy of Country Music.

Though highly successful, creative differences took their toll on the Mavericks, and they officially disbanded in the early 2000s, with each member going their separate way. After a few years’ hiatus, talk of a reunion tour started to surface, and Malo was on board to help make it a reality. “It just kept brewing and brewing,” Malo said. When finally the idea of an album was tossed out, the group that once turned country music on its ear with a galloping run of unexpected successes was back together again. “The chance to do it all again has been spirit-lifting,” Reynolds said. “If we’d continued together we would’ve just been a band. The break gives us a chance to be something relevant again.”

And relevant again, they are. The Mavericks, with frontman Raul Malo leading the way, have a new single, “Born To Be Blue,” a five-song EP called “Suited Up and Ready,” and a new untitled album on the way in September.
