“Few individuals have symbolized the South in popular culture as directly and indelibly as Charlie Daniels” — Encyclopedia of Southern Culture. Born in rural North Carolina, Charlie was raised on a musical diet that included Pentecostal gospel, local bluegrass, rhythm & blues and country music. All those great musical genres have played a part in the enduring Charlie Daniels success story. Charlie won a Grammy in 1979 for “The Devil Went Down to Georgia.” Thirty-three years later, Charlie has the distinction of being nominated for an ACM award for Vocal Event of the Year for his performance (along with George Jones, who will appear at AMT on June 3) in Aaron Lewis’ song, “Country Boy.” Congratulations, Charlie!

For over fifty years, Neil Sedaka has written, performed, produced, and inspired countless songs. Neil’s interest in music began at the young age of four, but it was not rock ‘n roll, but classical music that would shape Neil into the musician he is today. By the time he was eight years old, he had already begun his intensive classical piano training at the prestigious Julliard School of Music. At 16, Arthur Rubenstein voted Neil as one of the best New York High School pianists. Many years and hundreds of hit songs later, Neil is still wowing audiences, and most recently released “The Music of My Life,” which includes his first ever salsa song.

Coming this Thursday, March 1, Wynonna & the Big Noise make their AMT debut. Wynonna’s journey as one half of legendary country duo The Judds, with her mother Naomi, provides one of the most fascinating stories in country music history. Wynonna and Naomi rose to superstardom in the early ’80s on the strength of chart toppers like “Mama He’s Crazy,” “Why Not Me,” and “Grandpa (Tell Me ‘Bout the Good Old Days),” and picked up multiple Grammy, CMA and ACM awards along the way. Since striking out on her own in the early ’90s, Wynonna has gone on to not only be a tremendously successful solo artist, but she’s also a New York Times bestselling author thanks to her candid 2005 memoir Coming Home to Myself. “There’s one thing I’ve always wanted to do,” Southside Johnny confesses, “and that is to sing.” He has been doing just that for over a third of a century.
An exuberant rhythm and blues feel is Southside Johnny and The Asbury Jukes‘ trademark. The driving sound of their legendary horn section transports the band to their classic, jubilant, “let’s play all night” mood.
“I grew up on music,” Johnny said. “We listened to Billie Holiday, T-Bone Walker, Muddy Waters and Big Joe Turner. My parents loved music — the louder the better.”
Over the years, Southside Johnny (so nicknamed because of his bent toward the Blues sounds of the Southside of Chicago,) played in a number of blues and R&B bands, often joined by pals Bruce Springsteen, “Miami Steve” Van Zandt, and Garry Tallent.
“I’ll stack my group against any group out there. We enjoy playing, and the audience enjoys having a good time. Music is a shared emotion. We distill it down to that,” Johnny said.
When you distill Southside Johnny and The Asbury Jukes, you come down to 35 years of great music and good times.
