Although New Orleans’ traditional jazz scene had many top players in the 1950s, there was no one center for the city’s veteran greats to play. Hence, the Preservation Hall was founded in 1961 to promote traditional New Orleans jazz in all its authenticity. The Preservation Hall Jazz Band continues to present their unique New Orleans jazz sounds to the world.
Contemporary zydeco’s most popular performer, accordionist Stanley “Buckwheat” Dural and his band infuse their propulsive party music with strains of rock and R&B. This New Orleans musician’s slightly modernized, furiously energetic take on zydeco, a regional Louisiana musical genre that incorporates Creole, blues, and jazz music, has made him a top seller in the genre.
