History

Wess grew upon a farm in Fauquier County, Virginia and played guitar in the Cooke Trio, a small band with his mother and father. During his teenage years, he played in a three-piece band called Wess Cooke and the Country Boys.

He was a member of the Harlequin Association in high school, then went to study opera under Beverly Sills of the Metropolitan Opera. At Sills’ encouragement, Wess entered and won the Bland Music Scholarship Award. He used the scholarship money to attend Shenandoah Conservatory of Music for after acing his audition.

Wess’ music history includes three years with the Easter Brothers gospel group at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, and a stint at The Music Theatre of Williamsburg in Williamsburg, Virginia. While playing at the Carolina Opry with his own band, he recorded “The Wind Keeps Whistlin’ Dixie”. This single made it to the top 40 of country charts, where it remained for weeks.

In 2000, he received an invitation to come to AMT and participate in the Original Shows, and the rest is history; he’s been a fixture ever since. Wess is a lyrical baritone whose voice has a four octave range. He can sing first and second tenor, baritone, and bass and is known for always staying on pitch and on cue.

In 2008, Wess released The Journey, his first CD of all original music. His second original album, titled $10 Tip, was released in 2013, as well as a Christmas CD including two original songs. The following year, he released another original CD, and had his first headlining show at AMT.

Wess also had the honor of performing at the White House for two sitting presidents. Additionally, he has performed and collaborated with several stars, such as Emmy Lou Harris, Kenny Rogers, Merle Haggard, and more.

Our regular patrons love Wess and we know you will too.
